Indian researchers try to soothe farmers

In an attempt to allay the fears of farmers regarding genetically engineered rice, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in India has clarified that it has been proved through “precise bio-safety experiments” that proteins contained in such crops is non-toxic to human beings and animals.

Reacting to a recent incident at Alandurai, where a group of farmers and green activists had destroyed GM rice plants, TNAU issued a press release stating that the development of genetically modified crops has been recognized the world over for the past two decades as a method of crop improvement.
